What if my child needs more challenging work?
It is my goal to meet the individual needs of all the children in my classroom. I want each student to reach their highest potential so I will be engaging them in levels of learning that help them to attain those high points.
Based on previous teacher recommendation and class performance, some students have been identified as high ability students. They are placed in Tier II or Cluster Group classrooms. These students will need an enriched curriculum so they don't become bored with 2nd grade work. Cluster assignments will be focused on a 3rd-4th grade level depending on their individual needs. These students are expected to complete the regular second grade assignments and assessments. However, they will also be provided with challenge spelling, math, and reading assignments.

Tier II/Cluster Work Expectations
Students will be placed either a regular or challenge spelling list. I will check with previous teachers or parents to place them at the beginning of the year. I will see how they do for 3 weeks. If they are doing well, they will stay on the list. If not, I will ask them if they want to go to the regular list. After each 3 week time periods, I will check to see if they are in the right place.
The Everyday Math Series already has 3rd grade standards introduced in each chapter, but I will also provide your child with some 4th grade level math work.
During class discussions & teacher table time, I use higher vocabulary & take an extra step past regular second grade curriculum to challenge all students to a higher level of learning.
We will read some challenging novels during this school year. Students will be given time during to read their novel. However, students in this Cluster Group will be expected to read several chapters at home as well.
They will also be expected to work in their Personal Learning Journal. Each week they will choose one or two things that they would like to learn more about. They will read to learn about this topic and then draw pictures & write facts about these topics in their personal learning journal. This allows independent learning on topics of their choice. Most students thrive on this brain-friendly way of learning.
