What is DIBELS?
It is a set of assessments that determine early literacy skills. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills. When a child struggles with decoding or sounding out unfamiliar words, it slows down the fluency rate and interferes with comprehension. Since comprehension is a key to reaching a higher level of achievement, fluency practice is often emphasized in second grade.
